garlic, garlic soup

Forget the flu shot. A soup based on more than 50 cloves of garlic, onions, thyme and lemon will destroy almost any virus that enters its path including colds, flu and even norovirus.

As we sneeze and cough our way through these dark months of contagious nasties, garlic is being hailed for its powers to halt viruses in their tracks.

It has gained its reputation as a virus buster thanks to one of its chemical constituents, allicin.

A recent and significant finding from Washington State University shows that garlic is 100 times more effective than two popular antibiotics at fighting disease causing bacteria commonly responsible for foodborne illness.

When the garlic is crushed, alliin becomes allicin. Research shows that allicin helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure and also helps prevents blood clots. Garlic can also reduce the risk of developing atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Compounds in this familiar bulb kill many organisms, including bacteria and viruses that cause earaches, flu and colds. Research indicates that garlic is also effective against digestive ailments and diarrhea. What’s more, further studies suggest that this common and familiar herb may help prevent the onset of cancers.

‘This chemical has been known for a long time for its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal powers,’ says Helen Bond, a Derbyshire-based consultant dietitian and spokeswoman for the British Dietetic Association.

‘Because of this, people assume it is going to boost their immune systems. Lots of people are simply mashing up garlic, mixing it with olive oil and spreading it on bread.

‘But how or whether it may actually work has still not been proven categorically.’

Indeed, scientists remain divided on garlic’s ability to combat colds and flu. Last March, a major investigation by the respected global research organisation, the Cochrane Database, found that increasing your garlic intake during winter can cut the duration of cold symptoms — from five-and-a-half days to four-and-a-half.

But the report, which amalgamated all previous scientific studies on garlic, said it could not draw solid conclusions because there is a lack of large-scale, authoritative research.

The problem is that pharmaceutical companies are not interested in running huge, expensive trials — as they would with promising new drug compounds — because there is nothing in garlic that they can patent, package and sell at a profit.

Modified Garlic Soup Recipe

Serves 4
  • 26 garlic cloves (unpeeled)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) organic butter (grass fed)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne powder
  • 1/2 cup fresh ginger
  • 2 1/4 cups sliced onions
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme
  • 26 garlic cloves, peeled
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 3 1/2 cups organic vegetable broth
  • 4 lemon wedges
Preheat oven to 350F. Place 26 garlic cloves in small glass baking dish. Add 2 tablespoons olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt and toss to coat. Cover baking dish tightly with foil and bake until garlic is golden brown and tender, about 45 minutes. Cool. Squeeze garlic between fingertips to release cloves. Transfer cloves to small bowl.

Melt butter in heavy large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onions, thyme, ginger and cayenne powder and cook until onions are translucent, about 6 minutes. Add roasted garlic and 26 raw garlic cloves and cook 3 minutes. Add vegetable broth; cover and simmer until garlic is very tender, about 20 minutes. Working in batches, puree soup in blender until smooth. Return soup to saucepan; add coconut milk and bring to simmer. Season with sea salt and pepper for flavour.

Squeeze juice of 1 lemon wedge into each bowl and serve.

Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Rewarm over medium heat, stirring occasionally.

If garlic were found to be a wonder drug, consumers could simply buy it in the supermarket for 30p a bulb or grow their own in the garden.

Nevertheless, garlic has a long and proud tradition as a medicine. The Ancient Egyptians recommended it for 22 ailments. In a papyrus dated 1500BC, the labourers who built the pyramids ate it to increase their stamina and keep them healthy.

The Ancient Greeks advocated garlic for everything from curing infections, and lung and blood disorders to healing insect bites and even treating leprosy.

The Romans fed it to soldiers and sailors to improve their endurance. Dioscorides, the personal physician to Emperor Nero, wrote a five-volume treatise extolling its virtues.

One of the most interesting of the recent findings is that garlic increases the overall antioxidant levels of the body. Scientifically known as Allium sativa, garlic has been famous throughout history for its ability to fight off viruses and bacteria. Louis Pasteur noted in 1858 that bacteria died when they were doused with garlic. From the Middle Ages on, garlic has been used to treat wounds, being ground or sliced and applied directly to wounds to inhibit the spread of infection. The Russians refer to garlic as Russian penicillin.

More recently, researchers have unearthed evidence to show garlic may help us to stay hale and hearty in a number of ways.

Last June, nutrition scientists at the University of Florida found eating garlic can boost the number of T-cells in the bloodstream. These play a vital role in strengthening our immune systems and fighting viruses.

And pharmacologists at the University of California found that allicin — the active ingredient in garlic that contributes to bad breath — is an infection-killer.

Allicin also makes our blood vessels dilate, improving blood flow and helping to tackle cardiovascular problems such as high cholesterol.

An Australian study of 80 patients published last week in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that diets high in garlic may reduce high blood pressure.

In 2007, dentists in Brazil found that gargling with garlic water (made by steeping crushed garlic cloves in warm, but not boiling, water) can kill the germs that cause tooth decay and gum disease.

But they hit a snag: the volunteers refused to continue the experiment, complaining that the garlic gargle made them feel sick. Looking at the garlic soup recipe certainly made me feel queasy. Still, it gave me an excuse to use up my ample supply of garlic.

Though last year’s awful weather caused crop failures on my allotment, I enjoyed a bumper harvest of garlic.

Among its many other virtues, garlic kills slugs and snails. Researchers from the University of Newcastle believe it contains oils that may cripple the nervous systems of these slimy creatures.

There are two schools of thought as to the best way of preparing garlic to make the most of its medicinal qualities.

Argentinian investigators found it releases its allicin-type compounds when you bake the cloves, while scientists at South Carolina Medical University believe peeling garlic and letting it sit uncovered for 15 minutes produces the highest levels of compounds to fight infection.

So you can simply peel half of the garlic cloves and roast the other half with the kitchen door tightly closed (to stop the pong permeating throughout the house).

After an hour-and-a-quarter’s industrious soup-making, sprinkle lemon juice over a bowl of steaming, grey gloop and tuck in.

The heady aroma certainly revs up the appetite and the first spoonful does not disappoint. Delicious as it is, however, one large bowl of home-made soup is a more than ample meal.

As for the soup’s cold-preventing powers, only time will tell. Regular bowlfuls may very well keep me free of winter ailments, thanks to the virus-killing compounds they contain.

Or it could just be that my nuclear-strength garlic breath will keep everyone who is infectious far out of sneezing range for months to come.

rectal prolapse, rectum prolapse

Man Suffers Rectal Prolapse After Playing Phone Games On Toilet

You may not want to admit it, but gone are the days of reading books on the toilet! Now, everyone pulls out their smartphones and plays their favorite app to pass the time. In a weird way, our washrooms or public stalls have become little smartphone sanctuaries – but not anymore for one man from southeast China.

According to Kan Kan News, a man sat down on his toilet in the comfort of his home and began playing games on his phone.[1] After about half an hour of trying to pass a bowel movement, something unexpected happened.

It was around midnight that the unknown man was rushed to The Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. Surprisingly, a mysterious ball-sized lump had fallen out of his anus, but was still attached.

According to Dr. Su Dan who works in the gastrointestinal surgery division, the man’s rectum had detached from his body. Dr. Su diagnosed the man with, in medical terms, rectal prolapse. In this severe case, he suffered a “complete prolapse” in which the rectum becomes detached from the body, turns itself inside out, and slips out of the anus.

When doctors ran a computer tomography (CT) scan of the bulge outside of the patient’s body, they found it had a diameter of 16 centimetres. Fortunately, Dr. Su and her gastrointestinal surgical team were able to remove the bulge and he is now recovering.
“The patient has had rectal prolapse since he was four-years-old, the bulge was able to retract in the past,” said Dr. Su.[3] “But he did not have the condition treated, so the situation got worse.”
Although the man had had rectal prolapse from a very early age, Dr. Su claims that his complete prolapse was caused by the extended time spent on the toilet. A colleague of Dr. Su’s, Dr. Lv added that when sitting or squatting over a toilet, “the pressure in the abdomen builds up which would force the rectum to stick out as the pelvic muscles are not strong enough to hold.”[3]

The doctor highlighted that the patient’s intestinal wall even showed signs of bruisingand blood spots.

rectal prolapse, rectum prolapse

Other symptoms of rectal prolapse may include:
  • Leakage of stool from the anus
  • Leakage of mucus or blood from the anus
  • Feeling of having full bowels and an urgent need to have a bowel movement
  • Passage of many very small stools
  • The feeling of not being able to empty the bowels completely
  • Anal pain, itching, irritation, and bleeding
  • Bright red tissue that sticks out of the anus

Although it could happen to anyone, rectal prolapse is most common in children and older adults – especially women. It’s hard to pinpoint the exact cause of this condition, but there are a few major risk factors:
  • Straining during bowel movements due to constipation
  • Tissue damage caused by surgery or childbirth
  • Weakness of pelvic floor muscles which occurs naturally with age

How to Prevent and Treat Rectal Prolapse

First and foremost, if you experience a rectal prolapse, get to the hospital immediately. With children, prolapse tends to go away on its own. For adults, under the guidance of a doctor, there are some home treatments that can help them recover from a rectal prolapse.

You can push the prolapse back into place (if your doctor says it’s OK)
Avoid constipation
Broccoli

Broccoli ranks right up there with Brussels sprouts when it comes to vegetables that are hard to love. (Some people are simply wired to hate bitter greens.) But scientists recently added yet another reason for the broccoli-averse to just get over it. Turns out the cruciferous bunch not only helps prevent heart disease and repairs skin damage (and improve eye health, fight colds, and keep blood sugar levels low), it can protect our bodies from air pollution too.

A new study published in Cancer Prevention Research found that broccoli compounds help us flush out benzene through our urine. A known carcinogen, benzene can be found anywhere from paint thinner to car exhaust.

When research subjects drank tea made of boiled broccoli sprouts for 12 weeks, their excretion rate of the chemical shot up by 61 percent. The beverage also upped the level of acrolein—a pollutant inhaled from sources such as tobacco smoke and power-plant emissions—by 23 percent in the participants’ urine.

The scientists conducted the study in a rural province in China, a country notorious for poor air quality. The World Health Organization deems a daily average of more than 10 micrograms per cubic meter of particulate matter—tiny atmospheric particles such as soot and liquid droplets—unhealthy. The everyday average of the 10 most polluted Chinese cities exceeds 100 micrograms per cubic meter. In Beijing, there have only been two days in which air quality was considered “good”since April 2008.

Broccoli

“This study points to a frugal, simple, and safe means that can be taken by individuals to possibly reduce some of the long-term health risks associated with air pollution,” said lead researcher and Johns Hopkins University professor Thomas Kensler in a statement.

Sprouts pack higher levels of the chemical-fighting stuff, but regular broccoli has it too—just a lot less. The more bitter the broccoli, the better—though you’d still have to eat about 1.5 cups of the vegetable each day to get the same benefits as the study’s subjects did, Kensler told The Wall Street Journal.

But like any other superfood, broccoli sprouts are by no means a magic shield against health hazards such as China’s toxic smog.

“Air pollution is a complex and pervasive public health problem,” Kensler said. “Government leaders and policy makers [need to] define and implement more effective regulatory policies to improve air quality.”

foot reflexology

The concept of reflexology can be traced back to ancient Egyptian and Chinese civilizations. It was popularized in the United States in the early 1900s when various doctors and physiotherapists began to study the extent of nerve cells in the hands and feet. Reflexology is a safe and completely natural way for you to enhance the quality of your life. It uses massage therapy techniques to stimulate nerves, mostly in the palm of your hand and bottom of your foot. Each of these nerves branches off to different organs and glands in your body.

There are a surprising amount of ways reflexology can help you live a healthier and happier life. It can help alleviate headaches, cold symptoms, stress, and many other daily inconveniences (more detailed listing below) all through a simple massage.

How Does Reflexology Work?

For optimal results in reflexology you have to find out which nerves need stimulating. You do this by matching your ailment up with the right zones on your hands and feet. Once you’ve found the corresponding zone you can either have someone else apply pressure or simply do it yourself.

The pressure is spread among the many nerve endings, there are more than 7000 on one foot alone, and opens up pathways of energy that may have been congested. Oils and lotion can be used for sensational value but are said to interfere with the direct nerve stimulation.

Researchers in the medical field have found that the circulation techniques used in reflexology can help in the following ways:

● Reduction of anxiety and stress build-up
● Increasing relaxation and clarity
● Encouraging efficient distribution of nutrients and oxygen through the body
● Relaxing sore and tired muscles

food reflexology, hand reflexology

What is Reflexology Best For?
If you are intimidated by the mystery looming over modern medical techniques, you may find comfort in the simplistic safety reflexology has to offer. The overall relaxation and peace of mind is the most common application of reflexology and usually the first reason anybody tries it. There are however many more significant ailments that reflexology can target and relieve.

Different types of muscle pain – neck, shoulders, back, legs, etc… – can be targeted with the use of this therapy. If you have sore muscles, just find the nerve section that corresponds with the affected area.

Reflexology can also help reproductive matters, digestion problems, stress and anxiety, sleep disorders, and a generally awesome relaxant. There are many certified reflexologists out there but the methods can be taught and easily done at home.

Specific Ailment Areas

Because there are so many different nerve zones on your hands and feet it helps to have diagrams handy to determine the correct areas. Here are a few common ailments and their corresponding nerve zones.

Headache

For headaches you’ll focus mainly on nerve zones on the foot. Begin with circular rubbing on the big toes to relax your neck a bit. Then focus with more pressure on the upper halves of each toe to pinpoint nerves connecting to the head. You can also massage the upper halves of your fingers on both sides. You can also read my other article on how to relieve headache using essential oils.

Sleep Disorders

Targeting the pituitary gland is the ideal method of alleviating sleep disorders. In the direct middle of your fingerprint you’ll find the nerve linking your endocrine system. Apply direct pressure with the side of your nail. On the foot you should target the middle of your big toe on the bottom side. You can also read my other post to discover the best foods to get better sleep.

Stress

For anxiety a stress you can start with the neck and head areas in the toes. Another technique called the wrist twist requires you to form a circle around your wrist with your thumb and index finger and twist the opposing hand back and forth about twenty times. In addition to reflexology you can also use 14 effective natural remedies for stress and anxiety.

Colds and the Flu

For colds and the flu you can pinpoint the areas that correspond with your sinuses, nose, throat, and lungs. On the feet you should concentrate on the side of your big toe, the middle of each toe, and an inch below your toes. On the hands massage from the tip of your finger to just above the knuckle and back up again. I also wrote a post about top 10 natural treatments for cold and flu.

Digestion

One of the most popular methods for digestion relief requires a small sphere like a golf ball or tennis ball. Lock your fingers together with the ball inside and rub it around the bottom of your palm for around 60 seconds. You can also gently rub the lower third of your foot on the bottom side. To improve your digestion you can also try to use my digestive enzyme detox smoothie.

Asthma and Bronchitis

This ailment requires you to target the nerve zones associated with the lungs. On the top of your foot massage the width of your foot about an inch below the toes. On the bottom focus on the middle of the foot an inch below the toes. On your hands, massage just below the knuckles on top and where your palm meets the fingers on the bottom. There are other natural treatments for asthma.

Back Pain

When you target the spine reflexes you can quickly alleviate the terror of back pains. On the hands you should focus on the side of the thumb to the bottom of your wrist. Rub the bottom half of your foot on the bottom and the width where your leg meets the foot on top. If you want to prevent back pain you can also use my recommended 13 exercises to strengthen your back.

Tips For Beginners

● Search the web and check with the ARCB to find a certified reflexologist for your first session. They can show you exactly how to apply pressure and how long you should do it for great results.
● Find someone to help. If you don’t have to be the one applying pressure then you can focus more on relaxing and opening the clogged gateways.
● For the best results try reflexology several times throughout the day. It may not magically work the first time but it will gradually work its magic.

Doing reflexology is also one of the 70 habits featured in my e-book 70 Powerful Habits For Great Health which will guide you how to take positive steps to improve your wellness and overall health.

Dandruff

The most embarassing thing that could happen when you're dressed up for an interview or a formal dinner, is an all-consuming need to scratch an itchy scalp and also know that a cascade of white flakes would follow, onto a jet black blazer- laid bare for all to see. Dandruff is a medical problem that has managed to unite over half the adult population across the world - beyond gender, age and race.
Dandruff is a scalp condition which is caused by a fungus, Malassezia, which feeds on sebum (the oily matter secreted by the sebaceous glands on our scalp) and the dead skin cells which occur naturally due to formation of new skin. Although this microbe is a normal part of the scalp, this is when it turns problematic- the fungus feeds on sebum, breaking it down into fatty acids that may irritate the sensitive scalp of many. This is also the reason for dryness and itchiness on the scalp, leading to the dead skin cells accumulating into visible flakes. The level of sensitivity of people to these fatty acids determines whether they develop acute or mild dandruff. If you're looking for home remedies for dandruff, we're to help.

Malassezia thrive in moist environments and thus, become a nuisance during summers and monsoons due to excessive humidity and sweating. However, the cold wind during winters robs the scalp of moisture and leads to dryness that results in itching and flaking. Clearly, dandruff is on duty all year round.

Although there is no way to completely banish it from our lives (and hair) there are a lot of remedies that can be used 'at home' to keep it under check (so you don't have to shy away from those dark tees or dresses, in fear of that unsightly 'chalk powder' on your shoulders).
Here are some natural home remedies for dandruff you may not have known

Quick Home Remedies

hair, oil

1. Do not oil hair and keep it on for long

Delhi-based Dermatologist Dr.Deepali Bhardwaj says, "It's a pure myth that oiling is good for hair with dandruff". "In fact", she affirms "applying oil will lead to more dandruff as oil is like food for Malazzesia which leads to dandruff."

Applying oil to a dry, itchy scalp may sound like heaven but may only exacerbate your dandruff condition, especially when you let it sit on your scalp for longer periods of time.

Vinegar

2. Vinegar

Vinegar helps in treating itchy, dry skin and also helps to kill dandruff-causing fungus and bacteria. The acidic content of vinegar is supremely beneficial to drastically reduce flaking. Dr.Deepali advises, "My favourite home remedy is to apply an equal quantity mixture of white vinegar with water on the scalp skin about half an hour before a head wash."

Baking Soda

3. Baking Soda
Baking soda, acts as a scrub and exfoliates the scalp gently, without irritating it and removing dead skin cells. Exfoliation is essential to ensure there is no build up of flakes on the scalp that make dandruff even more visible. Dr.Sirisha Singh, Medical Director and Consultant Dermatologist at The Skin Centre in New Delhi says, "Baking soda, along with its exfoliation and anti-fungal properties, also soothes the scalp and reduces redness and itching."

You can simply add some baking soda to your shampoo while washing hair to derive its benefits.

 Neem

4. Neem

All of us are aware of the role that neem extract plays in almost all skin medications because of its antibacterial and antifungal qualities. Since dandruff can mostly be attributed to fungal colonization of scalp, it is only right to turn to this age-old remedy for skin ailments. Natural is always the best way to go; however Dr. Sirisha Singh cautions us to use a very diluted version of neem (neem boiled in water) for the scalp as concentrated versions may only irritate the skin further.

 Tea Tree Oil

5. Tea Tree Oil

All anti-acne and anti-fungal medications boast of tea tree oil due to its exceptional power to fight fungal and bacterial infections. Add a drop or two of tea tree oil to your shampoo and wash normally and notice the results sitting in the comfort of your home!

Garlic

6. Garlic

The pungent smell of the occasional garlic clove may make it a No-No for some but its medicinal value is definitely something that cannot be overlooked. Garlic is immensely beneficial as an anti-fungal natural product and the benefits of raw or crushed garlic (avoid cooked garlic for treating medical conditions) have mesmerized man for centuries. Pound a clove or two of garlic and after mixing with water, use it on your scalp to see quick results. The smell? You could always mix in a little honey and ginger!

Aloe Vera

7. Aloe Vera

Not only is aloe vera cooling but also mildly exfoliates the skin and has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. It is best to directly extract some from the aloe vera plant- it is transparent and has a thick consistency. It can be applied in the scalp and then washed off with a medicated anti-dandruff or mild shampoo. Dr. Sirisha also recommends this herb to calm down an irritated scalp and provide relief from inflammation.
