It is important to manage your blood pressure level because continuous high blood pressure can lead to several serious health complications, including stroke, kidney failure, and heart attack. \

The good news is you can easily control your blood pressure from the very beginning. But the better news is – you can lower your blood pressure level naturally by consuming unsalted tomato juice regularly.

In a study published in the Food Science and Nutrition journal, Japanese researchers from Tucson Plant Breeding Institute and Tokyo Medical and Dental University revealed that tomato juice could lower blood pressure level, LDL cholesterol, and prevent the risk of developing heart diseases significantly.

Blood pressure is a long-term ailment, which often requires heavy doses of medicine. Therefore, we try to find out natural remedies from evidence-based research so that you live a healthier life with no complications.

What Does Study Say about Blood Pressure and Tomato Juice?

The study was a yearlong one conducted on 184 male and 297 female Japanese participants. The contestants were provided one cup of unsalted tomato juice to drink every day over for a period of one year. At the end of the study, it was found that the people who drank the juice every day lowered their level of blood pressure effectively. They subsequently reduced the percentage of ‘bad’ cholesterol (LDL) in their blood.
Tomato juice is an easy nutrition choice and a great alternative to costly English medicines.

The participants were allowed to consume as much as they wanted in the course of 12 months. There was no restriction on the amount of tomato juice.

They were however asked to record how much they had per day and share the data with the researchers every quarter of the year.

Data analysis showed at the end of the period that 94 participants, who had high blood pressure and hypertension at the beginning of the research, noticed a decrease in their blood pressure count. These patients had not consumed any kind of BP drug before or during the study.

Blood pressure count is split into two: systolic and diastolic. After the study, the average systolic blood pressure count decreased from 141.2 to 137.0 mmHg and the average diastolic blood pressure count lowered from 83.3 to 80.9 mmHg, proving tomato as a natural remedy for blood pressure. Similarly, the cholesterol level also went down from 155.0 to 149.9 mg/dL.

Tomatoes a Superfood?

Apart from controlling blood pressure naturally, these red, juicy, ripe vegetables have plenty of other health benefits too.

They are delicious, agreed. They are cheap, agreed. They can be eaten raw, agreed. But did you know they are clustered with micronutrients?

Tomato is rich in vitamins and minerals, is a powerhouse of antioxidants, and can help our health in many ways.

One medium-sized tomato (100 gram) contains 18 calories, water 95%, fat only 0.2 grams, fiber 1.2 grams, carbohydrate 3.9 grams, protein 0.9 grams, and sugar 2.6 grams. Most of the fibers found in tomatoes are insoluble and comes in the form of lignin, hemicellulose, and cellulose.

Tomatoes are also a rich source of vitamin K1, potassium, vitamin C, and vitamin B9 (folate).

Antioxidant carotenoids: Tomatoes are rich in bioactive compounds, carotenoids, which are great for health.

Lycopene, one of the carotenoids, has properties that can aid in the prevention of cancer. Other antioxidants present in tomatoes are beta-carotene, naringenin (that decreases inflammation), and chlorogenic acid (that also lowers blood pressure level).

According to Allie Greg, founder of MyEasyVeganDiet, potassium is directly associated with lowering blood pressure and risks of cardiovascular diseases.

When tomatoes are juiced, the unfiltered solution can increase the concentration of vitamins and minerals and help you reduce the progress of these heart ailments.

Tomatoes are also good for the skin. Since they are rich in lycopene, tomatoes are known to protect our skin from sunburn. Rubbing tomatoes on skin daily can significantly reduce tanning and skin discoloration.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the number one cause of deaths across the world. In the year 2016, 27.7% of deaths resulted from CVDs, i.e. 15.2 million people approximately.

High blood pressure and blocked arteries due to high LDL are the root cause of cardiovascular disease development. So, if you are not worried about your cardiac health now, it’s high time that you do.
